How to Decode Epiphone Acoustic Guitar Serial Numbers

Where to Find the Serial Number on Epiphone acoustic guitar?

At first you need to find out the serial number on your acoustic guitar. To find the serial number in your epiphone acoustic guitar, you need to look over the label inside the sound hole. Meanwhile, if you are using older acoustics, then it might be pressed into the wood on the interior back of the body.

Where to find serial number on Old / Vintage Serial Systems (1930s–1970s)?

For very old Epiphone acoustics, there are documented serial ranges: e.g., from ~1944–1950, Epiphone’s acoustic serials ran in the 5000–5999 range.
For 1932 and 1933, the serial number is die-stamped on the interior side of an instrument’s back. You can see this by looking thru the bass-side “f” hole, generally below the applied label. From 1934 forward, the serial numbers were typed or stamped directly on the Epiphone label. The last documented serial number in this series is 20142.

How to find serial number on Modern Epiphone (Post-1990s)

Epiphone has used factory codes + structured serials: According to one breakdown:

Format: FYYMMRRRR (for a while)

  • F = Factory code (sometimes one or two letters)
  • YY = Year
  • MM = Month
  • RRRR = Rank / sequence number

In more recent guitars (~2008 onward), Epiphone switched to all-numeric serials: YYMMRRRRRR.

Meanwhile, you can also find from the Factory codes (from letters or numbers) as it can give you a clue about where the guitar was made.
Example: “16” = Qingdao (acoustic), China
Example: “SI” = Samick, Indonesia
